What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Browsers send the cookie back to the same site on later visits so the site can recognise you and remember choices you have made — for example, that you are signed in.

We also use related technologies (the browser's localStorage, sessionStorage, and similar) for the same purposes. References to “cookies” on this page mean all of these together.

Strictly necessary

These keep the site working. Without them, signed-in features (publishing articles, the admin dashboard) cannot function.

  • Supabase auth session — stored by our identity provider (Supabase) in localStorage. It keeps you signed in between page loads and is required for publishers and administrators. It is removed when you sign out.
  • UI preferences — small flags we cache in localStorage (e.g. the cached copy of your user profile) so the page renders quickly on return visits. No third party can read this data.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which articles get read and where readers come from. Google sets cookies (such as _ga and _ga_*) to count unique visitors and aggregate behaviour. Analytics is disabled on internal and authentication-gated routes (the admin dashboard, the editor, login and registration) so signed-in users are not tracked while they work.

You can opt out using Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Advertising

We are working towards displaying advertising on this site through Google AdSense. Once AdSense is active, Google and its advertising partners may set cookies on your device to serve and measure ads. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites.

You can opt out of personalised advertising at google.com/settings/ads, or opt out of third-party advertising cookies industry-wide at aboutads.info/choices.

How to manage cookies

Every modern browser lets you view, block, or delete cookies and site storage. The exact controls vary by browser:

  • Chrome / Edge — Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox— Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari — Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data

Blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent signed-in publisher features from working. Blocking analytics or advertising cookies has no effect on your ability to read articles.
