UPI Scam Alert: Fraudsters Using Fake Payment Screenshots to Trick Users

Cybercriminals are targeting users by sending fake payment screenshots and claiming successful transfers. Victims are tricked into handing over goods or money without verifying transactions.

A new type of cyber fraud involving fake UPI payment screenshots is rapidly increasing across India. Scammers are exploiting digital payment systems by sending edited or fake screenshots that falsely show successful transactions.

In most reported cases, fraudsters contact sellers through platforms like WhatsApp or OLX and agree to purchase items. They then send a fabricated payment screenshot claiming that the money has been transferred. Many victims, trusting the screenshot, hand over the product without checking their bank account.

Authorities advise users to always verify payments directly through their bank apps or SMS confirmations before completing any transaction. Relying solely on screenshots can lead to financial loss.

Additionally, users are urged not to share sensitive banking details and to report suspicious activity immediately to cybercrime authorities.

Staying cautious and verifying transactions can help prevent falling victim to such scams.
